Why Is My Radiator Cold At the Bottom?

If your radiator’s hot up top and icy underneath, don’t ignore it. That temperature split is usually a tell-tale sign of sludge sitting at the bottom and blocking the flow of hot water. It sounds dramatic - but it’s a very common fix.

What causes a radiator to be cold at the bottom?

A radiator that is cold at the bottom is usually caused by a build up of sludge in the system. This sludge is mainly composed of rust and dirt particles which accumulate from internal corrosion. As the sludge is heavier than water, it settles at the bottom which prevents water and heat flow to the bottom of the radiator.

How to fix a cold radiator bottom

To fix a cold radiator bottom, you will need to flush the sludge clogging up your radiator. This process involves:

Turn off your entire heating system
Let everything cool completely before you start. Hot water and DIY don’t mix.

Lay down protective sheets
Sludge is messy. Protect your floors (and your patience) before you loosen anything.

Turn off the valves
Close both the thermostatic valve and the lockshield valve to isolate the radiator.

Bleed and drain the radiator
Open the bleed valve to release pressure, then carefully drain the water into a container.

Remove the radiator and flush it through
Lift it off the wall and flush it outside with a hose until the water runs clear. This removes built-up sludge sitting at the bottom.

Get it sorted properly, and your radiator should heat evenly again - top to bottom, exactly as it should.

Why do I need to flush out my radiator?

If radiator sludge is making your home colder and creating an inefficient flow, that means you're paying more for heating than you have to. Radiator sludge can damage your boiler which can mean the longer you put off cleaning out your radiator, the bigger the problems can become.

Is the problem definitely sludge?

Radiators and heated towel rails are naturally warmer on top than the bottom, but some radiators more than others. For example, 'convection radiators' focus on convection heating which is when heat rises and pushes cool air downwards. This cool air is then heated and the cycle continues. All radiators use a combination of both convection heating and simply 'radiating' their heat out.

Therefore, most radiators will feel cooler at the bottom, but no radiator should be completely cold at the bottom.

If the above steps don't seem to be working, it may be time for a new radiator.

Should I fix a cold radiator bottom myself or call a professional?

If you’re confident with basic DIY and it’s just one radiator affected, flushing it yourself can be manageable. Just take your time, protect your space properly and make sure the system is completely cool before starting.

However, if:

  • Multiple radiators are cold at the bottom
  • Your heating system is older
  • The issue keeps returning
  • You’re unsure about repressurising the boiler

…it’s best to call a qualified heating engineer. In those cases, the problem is usually system-wide sludge, and a professional power flush will be far more effective than tackling one radiator at a time.

The goal isn’t just to make the radiator warm again, it’s to restore efficiency across your whole heating system.

We hope you found this guide useful in helping you fix your radiator and keep your heating bills down. It's also important to bleed your radiators and balance them to ensure they all heat up at the same rate.
