10 Clever Ways to Cut Your Heating Bills (Without Cutting the Cosy)

Trying to keep your home warm without wincing at your energy bill? You’re not alone. The good news: you don’t have to choose between comfort and cost. With a few smart tweaks (and a little radiator TLC), you can keep things wonderfully toasty without overspending.

Here are 10 practical ways to reduce your heating bills while keeping your home feeling just right.

1. Give your radiators a proper clean

Dusty radiators don’t just look neglected – they can’t perform at their best.

Vacuum around and behind them regularly, and use a slim radiator brush to reach inside. Wipe the exterior with warm soapy water and a soft cloth to keep them looking fresh. Cleaner radiators = better heat output and fewer damp or mould worries. It's one of those simple jobs that can make a huge difference.

2. Tackle draughts before they tackle you

If cold air is sneaking in through gaps in doors, floorboards or chimneys, your heating has to work overtime.

Seal up those gaps with draught excluders, strips or filler. It’s one of the cheapest and most effective ways to stop heat escaping – and instantly make your home feel warmer.

3. Move furniture away from radiators

Your radiator can’t heat the room if your sofa is hogging all the warmth.

Even shifting furniture an inch or two away allows heat to circulate properly. Let your radiators breathe, and they’ll reward you with better, faster warmth.

4. Make sure you’ve got the right BTU

If your radiator is too small for the space, it’ll constantly strain to hit the right temperature - costing you more in the long run.

Choosing the correct BTU (heat output) for your room size ensures efficient heating without overworking your system. The right size radiator is one of the smartest long-term savings you can make.

5. Don’t crank the thermostat

Turning the thermostat up to 25°C won’t heat your room faster. It just tells the boiler to keep going until it hits that temperature. That's because your thermostat is a limiter, not a speed dial.

In fact, reducing your thermostat by just 1°C could save up to 10% on your heating bill. That’s serious savings for one tiny adjustment.

6. Bleed (and flush) your radiators

if your radiators are showing cold spots at the top then there could be trapped air affecting the flow. Similarly, if there is cold spots at the bottom then there could be a back up of sludge.

Bleeding your radiators removes air pockets, helping them heat evenly and efficiently. Flushing clears internal build-up that slows everything down. Both mean less energy wasted and faster warmth when you need it most.

7. Layer up your interiors

Soft furnishings do more than look good.

Carpets, rugs and thick curtains help trap heat and reduce heat loss through floors and windows. Larger rooms in particular benefit from that extra layer of insulation.#

8. Upgrade to a smarter thermostat

Older thermostats can be clunky and inaccurate. Upgrading to a modern programmable or smart thermostat gives you greater control over timing and temperature. That means no heating empty rooms and no accidental all-night blasts.

9. Don’t dry clothes on radiators

Drying clothes on radiators blocks heat circulation and releases excess moisture into the air – which can lead to damp and mould. Your heating works harder, and your home feels stuffy.

If you can, use a heated airer or a properly ventilated space instead.

10. Upgrade your heating setup

If your radiators are outdated or underpowered, it may be time for an upgrade.

Modern radiators are designed for better efficiency, faster heat-up times and improved output. Heated towel rails can add both warmth and practicality in bathrooms and kitchens.

You could also consider electric underfloor heating for zoned control and consistent warmth – especially in high-use areas. It offers precise temperature control and helps reduce wasted energy in unused spaces.

The right heating setup doesn’t just warm your home. It works smarter for your lifestyle.

Saving on heating bills isn’t about living in a cold house. It’s about making your heating system work properly, efficiently and intelligently. A few small changes can add up to noticeable savings – while keeping your home beautifully warm.
